Preparing for a Fast
It's hard to believe that the new year is just around the corner. We have endured or survived another year in the age of Covid 19. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we take care of our bodies, minds, and spirits.
For the most part, we know how to take care of our bodies, even if we don’t act like it. Our bodies need rest, exercise, and nutrition ( a dietitian that I know told me that). In this season, many of us are growing in the care of our mental health. And I am thankful to God for that.
But we must not neglect our spirits for they need to be stretched and filled. One way for us to feed our spirits is to starve our flesh. As we turn away from food, we turn to God. As we fast from food, we feast on God's word.
So for those who are willing to give fasting a try here are 3 things to help you prepare.
- Purify your intent - What is your motivation for fasting? Do you want human attention? Or do you want God's attention? What we do does not please God as much as having the right motive. Right intentions always get God's attention. So focus on God.
- Clarify your purpose - What are you looking for God to do in your life? What do you need God to be for you this year? Be clear on the purpose of your fast. Is there anything specific you are asking God to do with your career or for your business? Do you have goals for your family or marriage? What do you want God to do in your spiritual life? Remember the greater the clarity the more fulfilling the win.
- Identify your obstacle - We all have hindrances and they come in varied forms. Sometimes it is our own doubts that get in the way. Sometimes we tell ourselves, "That's too difficult." At other times the obstacle is an emotional or even a physical challenge. For this fast, the obstacle can be as simple as not having a blender. Whatever your obstacle might be, identify it so that you can overcome it.
